This is a clip from the TV show ‘euphoria’ by HBO, which was fired aired on 16th of June 2019. This scene is called ‘Two seconds of nothing’.
It starts off with a overhead shot of one of the protagonist ‘rue’, this show features an ensemble cast, looking up at the ceiling then snorting a coke line out of a board. Then then camera pans at a smooth 360 angle into a another atmosphere. This could suggest action code and gets the audience engaged as to what is about to happen and why is this character taking the drugs. Then it shifts to a montage of ‘rue’ drinking and again snorting cocaine. The montage is of the effects in ‘rue’ mind as the cinematography and changing of lighting is so that audience can feel the drugs high with ‘rue’ as we going through that journey with her.
The use of shot/reverse shot was positioned in a way to make the link between ‘rue’ addiction and her lifestyle because in this clip there is a voice over of the protagonist ‘rue’ which could represent enigma code as we want to know what causes this and the effects it has on ‘rue’. The sound for this scene fits perfectly with the scene this is because the sound is referring to the numbness of drugs and not feeling anything which is parallel to ‘rue’ emotions through the cinematography.
The use of close up and pans throughout the scene of ‘rue’ taking drugs and drinking is affecting her mental health. In this scene the camera pans then edits into a match on action of her ‘rue’ doing a voice over which suggests it’s her conscious talking which connotes that she is emotionally unstable and has taken something which is having a huge impact on her because her feels ‘nothing’ hence the scene is called ‘two seconds of nothing’.
The lightning changes through this scene this is from when ‘rue’ is walking through the party the lighting used is filler lighting which we can see ‘rue’ and each time she would drink or take drugs in that party the substance is highlighted and positioned in well – lit and clear viewing. This is because it trying to show the audience what ‘rue’ the protagonist has taken so we can go on that experience with her which is depressing as her addiction had ruined her life and mental health.
The lightning in this part in the scene is of ‘rue’ drinking lean which a cough syrup which has her in a state which she can’t feel anything and the lightning from her surroundings which is of a house party and she is in slow and boundless condition however the party is going on as ‘normal’. This could be suggested as an action code as ‘rue’ could lapse into a unconscious state which could be life-threatening.
The makeup used on rue was Parnell to the atmosphere as she was in a part doing drugs and the makeup she was of sparkles which could connote her not being aware and "high"and the sparkles represent the sky ans stars. The panning of the camera whilst she was taking the cocaine was a pathway to showing the audience we are on that journey with the protagonist. This connotes that the movement of rue's mind and body moving and showing that we are on the journey with her to experience the intake of the drugs and the effects it has on rue.
The use of slow pacing editing and shots whilst the music was fading in the background suggest her body in being overtaken and the slow fading suggests her mind is slowing down and the music lyrics states "feel the morning on my face" is synergy of what to expect and feel throughout the video.
The background shot used in the video of the other teens at the party suggests the pressure and the message the producers were trying to send that this is normalised and rue fading off with the music connotes her atmosphere and tone.
The show states the ensemble cast and how they all intertwine with the story-line an having that cast determines the idea behind the show. This means that rue's drug addiction is relevant to her atmosphere which the directors and producers are trying to convey in this scene.
