Film Industry: BBFC film regulation
1) Research the BBFC in more detail: what is the institution responsible for? How is it funded? What link does it have to government?
The BBFC is responsible for rating movies as to which is appropriate for which age groups. The have a link to the government as a member of House of Lords, Lord Patel is their vice president. They are funded through charged fees which means that film distributors will pay to have their work rated. However, the BBFC is a non-governmental body which means they are independent body.
2) Read this BBFC guide to how films are rated. Summarise the process in 50 words.
Films are rated through terms two this means that the controversial or extreme content is seen in these two teams. Often they get more than one opinion to rated films and this means there are often are more than two teams. All the content/general theme that are viewed are plot, characters and outline individuals scenes. The timing of each scene is rated too such as type of shots, camera angles, bad language, drug references and sex and violence.

The BBFC has to take in account many issues when classifying a film such as Sex, Sexual violence, nudity, drugs, violence and discrimination.
4) Read this BBFC section on controversial decisions. Why did The Dark Knight generate a large amount of media coverage regarding its certificate? Do you agree with the 12A certificate The Dark Knight was awarded?
The dark knight had gotten a 12A artificer which was awardee by the media however many felt that the violence shown in the movie shouldn't be something that children aged 12 and above should have to witness and these types of acts of violence could influence them as it could be watched by many young kids.
5) What are the guidelines for a 15 certificate?
The guidelines for a 15 certificate would be violence, sexual behaviours, drugs, nudity, threat or horror. This is because its appropriate as the people watching would be aware that this behaviour in real life isn't excused.
6) The BBFC website offers an explanation of every classification it makes and detailed case studies on selected titles. Look at the rating for Chicken and explain why it was given a 15 certificate.
Chicken was rated a 15 because of the violence and references to sexual assault and rape which was something very difficult for a younger audience to process. The reference to sex was shown in the movie and ablest slurs used in the movie was why it was rated a 15 certificate.
