Statement of Intent second draft

Old copy;

In this music video, the chosen song would be somebody's watching me by Rockwell. The mainstream audience for this music video would a niche audience who listen to both the hybrid genre of pop and rock material however, the mainstream availability to watch this song will amount to lots of audience engagement from a wider perspective. The choice of genre would be hybrid which is between pop and rock, this connotes a wider audience range. The sponsorship deal with this artist would be between JBL boombox which will be included in the music video at a specific scene which will help greater the engagement for the brand and the artist. The two locations where my music video will set in would be the woods (outdoor) and a cabin (indoors). The music video conventions for this music video would be a mixture between slow movements and a lot of editing. The genre would be based around horror and a short film like music video. The camerawork will vary depending on scene but it will contain many medium shots, close ups, personnel view shots (angle from the protagonists eyes), and long shots.

The magazine in which Rockwell will do a cover issue in would be rolling stone in their latest issue within the music section. However, the original music magazine will be called "VideoStar" this means that my artist will be on the cover page (central image) which he will posing with a guitar and holding a cigarette which convey's the rock and pop genre which he will linked with and with the music video conventions. The first few cover lines on the cover would be "Rock/Pop is coming back!", "Get tickets for Rockwell's latest show", "New 80's...coming back". I will include enigma codes and action codes to convey the media language, this means that in the music video there would camera shots to convey a jump scare for the protagonist and audience and they could understand this through the enigma codes through the slow pace camera movement. The action codes will be the jump scare as the chorus sets and this would connote the music and genre have synergy.

My music video will subvert stereotypes in the media as my protagonist will be a black male and the hero would be a female. This would link to the media theory is Stuart Hall's 'Reception theory' as they preferred, dominant and oppositional reading in this music video will be up to the audience. This denotes that there would be multiple ways of understanding the message in the music video.

New copy of statement of intent -

For this music video, I will be using the song "Somebody's watching me" by the artist Rockwell. The mainstream audience for this music video would be the mixture of older people who've known and liked the song since it came out back in 1984, as well as millennials. The genre for this song relates to pop and rock. However, the genre for this music video would contain elements of thriller/suspense which would reach a mainstream between the ages of 18 and above. The sponsorship deal I will include in my music video will be a headphone endorsement, with JBL wired headphones. I will be including these wired headphones in my music video because it will help boost engagement with the audience with appeal of nostalgia. The headphones will be located near certain shots, is to make clear that these are the sponsorship deal. The locations for this music video will be set in rural and deserted places as the concept relies on two best friends going out on a camping trip, later turns into a nightmare as we found out through the camera works and a narrative one of the friends has been the stalker all along. This music video is set to be located in four different locations; the forest in Perivale, a closed-off room with only computers, an empty tree-house, and a camping site. The music video conventions would be based mainly around the narrative rather than the performance element however, there would be scenes where the protagonist lip-syncing to the lyrics, this would include the performance element.

The music magazine will be called "VideoStar" this means that the cover image will feature a teenager (Male) dressed in costume that is heavily associated with Rock/pop culture, he will be posing with a guitar and holding a cigarette which conveys the rock and pop genre. The first few cover lines on the cover would be "Rock/Pop is coming back!" and "Get tickets for Rockwell's latest show" and "News 80's...coming back". I will be using these titles to covey enigma codes to capture the attention of the audience to then we talk about possible tour dates and merch releases. Focusing on the music video's treatment I will convey both action and enigma codes, this means that the editing and the range of camera shots will articulate the tension which will lead to sudden jump scares as the chorus sets and this would develop the synergy between the music and genre. I will achieve synergy through keeping the the same characters from my music video into my music magazine. This means that the protagonist in my music video will be the front cover for my publication. Additionally, the colour scheme and aesthetic from the music video will also be incorporated into my publication.

 Conventionally in the genre of horror/thriller, the protagonist are typically white men with the narrative of saving themselves or the female character "damsel in distress"  from the antagonist. However, in my music video, I chose to actively cast  two teenagers of Asian and middle eastern descent. These two actors would subvert stereotypes in the media because you don't usually see young minorities in many thrillers or suspenseful movies. The representation that can be applied to my music video would be Hall's idea of “products do not reflect reality”. This connotes that the media doesn't always show factual scenarios that audiences can universally understand or relate too. Additionally, this theory states that the media often hides or sensationalised certain aspects of human sociology i.e mental health, drugs and alcohol misuse, teenagers, minorities etc. Typically, men but often men of colour are represented as hyper-masculine and emotionally detached. Nevertheless, the characters in my music video will subvert this as the protagonist will show emotional vulnerability as Ari (victim) is being stalked by his male best-friend which isn't at all common but the hyper-fixation that Fai (stalker) has developed is a direct cause of his lack of control over the friendship and a simple friendship ha turned into a nightmare. The feminist theory...

This music video will cater to a mainstream audience as the demographics for them would be mainly millennials who are between the ages of 18 to older people. Relating to the demographic I can suggest that our audience would be from a working-class background or are studying students. The psychographics would interpret that this mainstream audience would like a variety of music genres as they would be watching this music video. Other bands and artists my target audience would enjoy would be mainstream indie and rock bands/artists such as Red Hot Chili Pepper, Michael Jackson, Billy Idol, Queen, The Specials, and newer bands such as The Neighbourhood and Arctic Monkey for the younger audience. Applying Blumler & Katz's "Uses and Gratifications" theory the audience pleasures that my music video and magazine will cover would personal relationships as Rockwell's current and potential fanbase can get recent updates for tours, new music release, and merchandise all from reading the magazine. The music video will provide entertainment and escapism as they can escae their current reality and entrain themselves with this concept being told through this music video.

The record label my artist will be signed to would be Universal Music Group, this is because it's one of the largest record label company that globally sources many different types of music. The music magazine will be published alongside Rolling Stone which is owned by Penske Media Corporation.
