Cinematography blog tasks

1) Write an analysis of the cinematography in the opening sequence. Highlight your use of media language and try to cover camera shots, angles and movement using the terminology we have learned in lessons.

In the middle scene for the shinning contains various panning movements as captures the creepy essence of the scene. The use of medium close up that pans from the characters back and fourth whilst they exchange dialogue is well ocstrated as which each sudden pan between Wendy and Jack makes Jack ( the villain) look superior and Wendy inferior which captures the scene well. There are quick point of view shots which could convey that we as an audience must side with the victim but it's also trying to humanize Jack to an extent. This is because the smooth panns could suggest it will end the process by a clean murdered ending.

2) How does the camerawork give the audience clues about the setting, narrative and character?

The camerawork gives off the clues that this scene is set in the dinning room as it has large windows and has a family tables which suggest it's a family home. The weather is seen to be the typical rainy, dark night. This is from the sudden panning of the camera which then we see a glimpses of the weather and setting. From the camera movement and dialogue exchanged by the characters it suggests that narrative states that of insane man has escaped from an asylum and is now tourturing a family nearby. However from watching the movie it's not about that but rather a family man driving himself into insanity and tourturing his own family. This is because the camera shots such as the medium close up and long shots are formed in a way to show that this isn't the loving father anymore it's a different person to which people knew before. The development of the characters is shown to has twist and turns to convey the idea that narrative changes as the movie disequilibrium continues.

3) Find and analyse three film or TV stills. Embed the images in your blog and analyse the camera shot/angle and what they communicate to the audience.

Downton Abbey ~ 2019

This still shot is from the movie downtown Abbey. This camera is a long shot with the 5 main characters  ( protagonists) and the buttler in frame. It is a daylight shot with all the characters in clear view. This long shot communicates the wealth and superiority this family owns and communicates the old fashioned attire they wear could symbolise their attitudes too.

Molly's Game ~ 2017

This still short is from the film Molly's game. This camera angle is called an over the shoulder shot which is an angle taking by the direction to show the suspense or seriousness in a scene. The character is seen- from their facial expression- to be worried or anxious about something this communicated from the shot. The anonymity of the second character before the camera suggests to the audience that they could be giving some news to the character in front of them and is building to an climatic drop.

Suicide Squad ~ 2016

This shot is from the movie suicide squad. The camera shot used in this scene is called a double shot this is because it captures two chacters in the same frame but from different experiences and facial expressions. This shot is used by the director to show the superiority of a certain character. The shot is trying to communicate the idea that the protagonist the joker is an arrogant and is of abusive nature this is from the placing of this hands onto the other character - 'prey' - and his eyes directly towards him to dictate his authority over the man. This shot conveys the idea that the joker is insane this is from the tattoo and body and hair modification that is creepy but subverting the norm.
