TV assessment

Question 3
Steve Neale suggests media products need to show “repetition and difference” in their use of genre. To what extent do your television close-study products support this view? [25 marks]

1) My CSP supports Neale's argument regarding media products showing 'Repetition and difference' to their specific genre. This would linked to Capital and Deutschland 83' as they both show these characteristics to support Neale argument.

2) Hesmondhalgh stated that for cultural industries such as tv shows or film to gain economical success they need to take risks this is shown with the state drama Capital. This shows consists of different perspectives of the inflation for houses in London had caused like a domino effect. Capital fits with Todorov's narrative theory as they equilibrium is of the 3 main families going about their normal lives when a villain comes and destroys that narrative as he is being mysterious and taking pictures of the houses and sending out postcards harassing the residents. Therefore, this fits with Neale's argument of 'repetition and difference' as we see the characters are of normal backgrounds with their jobs but are different because this disequilibrium has caused a break in their lives and they all play a part in each other's lives.

3) Neale's argument is agreed with the TV drama Deutschland 83' as this period drama is set in 1983 about a young spy Martin (protagonist) working an Intelligence for both East and West Germany. This agrees with the statement of 'repetition and difference' as this drama reflects the two different ideologies at the time and how it affected the masses in Germany but the repetition part comes into play as this is a historical events which will bring nostalgia to those to lived in that period of time and the Mise-en-scene for this show relieves that time. This show had accumulated 3.19 million views on the first episode when it was aired in June 2015. This was the rise of foreign language tv dramas as this show sparked many people to watch from its intriguing trailer which didn't have subtitles so that in itself caused curiosity for their audience to watch and see what was going on. The 'difference' that Neale stated could be referred to Deutschland 83' print advert which was different to each other as the UK and US print advert contained various if contrasted colors such as blue, black, purple and pink but the European print advert was of the protagonist Martin and wearing headphones with a radio attached with gave it a simplistic touch this would be because European have a minimalist design and this could be linked contextually as back when the USSR had ruled over Easted Germany their expression was silenced which means that traditional had moved onto the newer generations.

4) In conclusion, the contrast between Deutschland 83' and Capital is that they both are from different genres, time and culture but their common ground would be that they show repetition in their tv drama.
