The impact of new/digital media on TV: blog task
Go to our Media Magazine archive and read the article on Netflix and the Cultural Industries (MM63 - page 45). Create a blogpost called 'The impact of new/digital media on TV' and answer the following questions:

1) What does the 'industry' concept in A Level Media Studies refer to?

The industry concept in media studies relates to the producing and distribution process of media texts in the media industry. This means the legal and regulatory requirements that media companies must take. 

2) What does David Hesmondhalgh argue with regards to how the creative industries have changed since the 1980s?

Hesmondhalgh argues that since 1980s that the media industry had taken a drastic change. This means that the industry has taken a cultural changes such as in diversity and understanding that an audience is rather active than passive.

3) Choose the three most significant points Hesmondhalgh makes regarding the changing cultural industries. Why are these the most significant in your view?

-) The first point would be 'Globalization' referring to the media texts being available in different parts of the world and giving power to other countries in forms if media, this would link to the peak of foreign language tv and film.

-) The second point would be 'Digitalisation' this would refer to the techology made to have open communication between traditional media values and mixing their cultural understanding.

-) The third point would be big companies owning smaller companies to maximize profit for them. This would be significant as it means that the conglomerates will have more influence over certain industries.

4) What is technological convergence? 

Technological convergence is the idea that any forms of media can be found on a phone of piece of technology for their uses. This can be seen as a form of digitalisation. 

5) How are technology companies challenging traditional broadcasters in the TV industry?

Technology companies are challenging traditional broadcasting in the TV industry through screaming services such as Amazon, Netflix and HULU. This means that audiences can now stream their film or show without having to wait and having to pay a small subscription fee. 

6) What budgets will Netflix, Amazon and Apple spend on original programming next year according to the article?

According to the article Netflix will spend an estimated 8 billion on Netflix original tv shows, Amazon will spend a budget of 4.5 billion and Apple will spend a budget of 1.5 billion on new projects.

7) How many countries are Netflix and Amazon available in?


Netflix & Amazon are available in 160 countries.

8) The global nature of modern television means producers are having to consider international audiences when creating content. What example from Netflix does the article use to explain this?

The global nature of modern television for Netflix would be their TV show "Stranger things" where they name the villain of the show after a character from the game dungeons and dragons which was played by the masses back in 80s which it was set in. This would give it the nostalgic experience for their wider audience range.

9) Do you think technology companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon will increase their interest in the television industry?

Yes, I do believe that companies such as google and Facebook would increase their interests in the television industry because Facebook already has Facebook original content available so does Amazon with Amazon prime however they would engage more with his type of content in the future.

10) How do changes in technology influence the creation of TV dramas such as Capital or Deutschland 83? Try and make specific references to the two TV CSPs in your answer.

The changes in technology influence many tv dramas such as Deutschland 83' or Capital because their social media presence and historical or cultural significance it has on reality which a audience can understand such as music, art or social issues.
